England Career

england

Kevin Keegan was the man who handed Steven Gerrard his senior international début, against Ukraine in May 2000, in a warm up game for Euro 2000. Gerrard participated in the tournament and was outstanding in England’s 1-0 victory over Germany, however that tournament came a little too soon for Gerrard - playing a cameo role in the other two matches. Gerrard played an integral part in the qualifying matches for England for the 2002 world cup finals. Gerrard was one of the three Liverpool players that scored in the memorable world cup qualifying match in September 2001 against Germany in their 5-1 demolition of the Germans. That coincidently was his first international goal for England. He played a key role for England in qualifying for Euro 2004, outstanding performances in matches at home and away to Slovakia helped his cause as a world class international striker. He was a rock in the heart of midfield during England’s goalless international match in Turkey, the result helped in England’s progression for Euro 2004. Gerrard featured in all four of England’s Euro 2004 matches, he scored in England’s second qualifying match against Switzerland in their 3-0 victory. England were eliminated from this tournament on penalties against Portugal in the quarter finals.

Gerrard came back stronger than ever in England’s quest in qualifying for the 206 world cup finals. He scored crucial goals in their qualifying matches against Austria and Azerbaijan and is a key member of England’s 2006 world cup finals squad. He scored in matches against Trinidad & Tobago and Sweden in the 2006 world cup finals.
